On Friday, March 14, 2013, I was laid off from my corporate job. As the preceding months had been filled with talk of “right sizing” and corporate cuts and closed door meetings, where I, along with many others, were on the wrong side of the door, the event itself was not unexpected.

That Friday did hold a surprise for me, though. After I sat through the obligatory meeting with HR, collected my personal belongings from a desk I would never sit at again and turned in my security badge, I went home and found a letter.

The letter, dated about a week before, was from a mentor of mine who had been very influential during the early part of my career. We hadn’t been in touch in quite some time, so to see his familiar handwriting on the envelope brought me back a few years.

With a mix of puzzlement and excitement, I opened the letter and read, in part:

“…you can succeed in anything you put your mind to. Your potential is unlimited.”

Receiving that message of support and appreciation on a day when I had essentially been told that I had no potential was one of the most uplifting experiences I’ve had.

I don’t know what possessed my mentor to write that message to ensure that I received it on the day when I needed it most, but I am incredibly grateful that he did. I often reread that letter when I need an emotional boost and a reminder that I have support out there in the world. It’s also prompted me to send a few letters like that as well. I’m not sure that my letters will have the same effect or impeccable timing, but I can always hope.
